Why I am creating MyScape

In a time when we are urged to specialize, optimize, and outsource anything difficult to AI, I feel scattered, not because I lack interest, but because I care about too many things.

Climbing, handstands, carpentry, philosophy, coding, drawing, storytelling, reading. What ties them together? What do they mean within the larger arc of a life?

Each of the previous experiences mentioned has taught me something unique, but bouncing between them has often left me feeling untethered. Like a wanderer with many maps, but no clear path.

So I want to build a map, a personal world, that allows me to move meaningfully among my many interests, rather than feeling lost with in them.

As I child, I remembered playing games as I grew up. Mmorpgs were my favorite, RuneScape in particular.

In this game you started out as a character and were left to explore the world on your own. The sky was the limit. You could go raise your combat level to fight harder monsters, or spend your entire time in some quarry mining rocks that you use to smith into powerful amuletes.

This game stuck with me.

Imagine if I created a world that mimicked a game like RuneScape. A world that I could explore.

MyScape is my attempt to build a personal world, a fictional but true space that lets me track my growth, document my skills, and move through life with a sense of direction and play.

Like a real-life RPG. Like RuneScape, but for becoming a better human. Or at least trying to.

How will I do this, you ask? Honestly, I don’t fully know yet.

But you won’t find out until you start doing.

So I will begin by documenting and building this world on a website, and see where it takes me.

I have a lot of ideas about what I this could be. But for now I want to keep it simple.

My current framework:
– choose 1 physical skill
– choose 1 crafting skill
– choose 1 learning skill
– track and document over time
– build out a rich web experience for myself, and anyone else who’s interested.

Another aspect I want to touch is community.

Community matters more than ever in today’s world. Despite all the tools and technology meant to connect people, it feels like its doing the oppostite. And I want MyScape to be more than just my personal journey.

I hope to build a community of curious, multi-interested seekers. People who like me feel scattered but are eager to grow, learn, and support each other.

I’m honest, Im not naturally great at building community. It’s something I struggle with. But I also believe its a skill I can develop.

So part of this project is about learning how to create space where people can share, challenge, and inspire one another. Where we can walk the path together, even if we take different routes.

At its core, MyScape is a philosophy of becoming.

I dont believe growth needs to be linear, optimized, or measured only by outward success. I believe there other qualities such as pursuing mastery not to win, but to understand. In treating life as a world to explore, not a ladder to climb.

MyScape is an experiment in Being, seeing skills as a path to insight and connection. Its about developing through difficulty, curiosity, and time.

I want to create a system that honors both the messiness and beauty of self development. One where failure is inevitable, but transformed into better future decisions. Where different kinds of work; physical, intellectual, emotional, creative can have a place and purpose.

This is the world I want to live in. So I’m building it.

I don’t know exactly where this path leads, I just know its worth walking.

This project might change shape over time. It probably will. But my intention is simple: to keep showing up, to keep learning, to build something that reflects both who I am, and who I want to become.

If you’re someone whos felt scattered, curious, full of half maps, maybe this speaks with you. Maybe youve been building your own world all along without knowing it.

Either way, MyScape is where I begin.

To my future self: I hope this helps you remember why you started.

About Me

I’m Shane Roach, a creative thinker who loves exploring many different interests — from writing and drawing to movement and self-reflection. I believe life is a continuous journey of learning and practice, and I try to approach every day with curiosity and openness.

Through MyScape, I’m sharing pieces of that journey. Whether I’m experimenting with a new drawing technique, reflecting on a day’s experience, or working to build new habits, I want to invite you along for the ride.

When I’m not working on MyScape, I enjoy hiking, climbing, playing music, reading, and I’m always excited to discover new ways to grow.
